How wind, swell, tide, and current interact along a route

The four forces do not add politely. Wind blowing against a current steepens and shortens the seas well beyond what either number suggests alone. Wave period decides whether a given height is a ride or a beating. And current changes your speed over ground, which moves every arrival time, which changes which forecast hour each leg actually meets. Read them together, per leg, or you are not reading the trip.
Wind against current: the multiplier
When wind and current run the same direction, the water stretches out and a forecast chop can feel gentler than the numbers. When they oppose, the waves compress: shorter, steeper, breaking sooner. The same 15 knots reads completely differently across a strong ebb than with it, and constricted tidal passes and exposed entrances are where the effect concentrates. This is the single interaction most worth planning around on tidal water.

Current running against the wind stacks the waves up; running with it stretches them out. Set the wind, pick which way the current runs, and watch the water change.

Period beats height
Three feet of swell at twelve seconds rolls under the hull. Three feet of wind chop at four seconds is a wall every boat length. Forecast height without period is half a number: always read the two together, and treat short-period seas near your height limit as over it.
Current moves your clock
Two knots of current against a boat that cruises at eight is a twenty-five percent change in speed over ground. On a long leg that moves your arrival by an hour or more, and the forecast you checked for the old arrival time now describes water you will not be on. This is why a route should be read at each leg’s estimated time of arrival, recomputed with the current, not at departure time.

Reading it as one picture
The dock question is never “what is the wind” alone. It is whether the wind, the sea state it has built, and the current stage at each point of the route make the hours you will actually be out there acceptable for your boat and your crew. That cross-reading is exactly the work a captain does by hand with forecast, tide tables, and buoy pages open side by side, and it is the reasoning a good pre-departure brief should show, not hide.
